“Wh-what are you talking about, Danny? What do you mean by being trapped in this house?”

“What, Mike, are you scared about being inside this house, which may be haunted?”

“Nope. Here, let me see if I can open the door so we can get out of this place.” Mike tried again but couldn’t open the door. “It’s locked,” he told Danny.

“We’ll just have to find another way out, so don’t worry about it, all right, Mike? Things will be just fine.”

So that was it—the Parker boys were trapped in a haunted house. But the main thing was, there was no way out at all, but was there another way out or not.

Back over at the school Halloween party, Steve was hoping that Danny and his brothers were all right in the house. He looked at the time and realized it was almost eight. Time flies when you’re having fun, he thought. Steve was enjoying his time at the party.

But on the other hand, Mitch, who knew where Danny and his brothers were, still didn’t tell Steve about it. But he knew he was going to have to very soon. He went over to Steve and sat down next to him. “Hey, Steve.”

“Hi, Mitch. You having fun?”

“Of course I’m having fun. But wait a minute. Where are your friends—Danny, Mike, and Bobby Parker?”

“I don’t know where they are. They may be running late, that’s all. Is there something wrong?”

“Are you sure that they’re late, and are you sure that they are coming to the party?”

“Yeah. I don’t know what’s keeping them. Do you know what’s going on, Mitch?”

“Yep, I do.”

“Well?”

“Maybe they’re somewhere else but not here.”

“Wait a minute here, Mitch. You’re telling me that they are somewhere else, but where are they?”

“Oh, come on, Steve. Don’t play games with me. I know where they are, and you know as well.”

Steve shrugged and said, “Yeah, I do know where they are.”

“So tell me, then, Steve.”

“They’re exploring the house on Hookworm Road.”

“You mean the old Nelson house?”

“Yes, how did you know?”

“Well, as I was using the bathroom, you and Danny were talking about it. So I didn’t want to say to him I try but he didn’t see that I didn’t know at all. But he was wrong. I do know what he and Mike and Bobby are doing at this time. What you were thinking, Steve? What happens if they get hurt exploring that old house?”

“Oh, come on, Mitch. Nothing is going to happen. They’ll be just fine exploring that house.”

“Steve, we can all get into a lot of trouble for this.”

“What do you mean? Look, Danny was the one who wanted to explore that old house. I even asked him the other night if he was sure he wanted to do this, and he said yes, even after I told him the story about what happened inside that house. But nothing is going to happen, and even if they did get into trouble, I myself would take the blame.” Steve walked away.

Mitch knew he had to do something about this.
